The date of the first written mention of Nuremberg in 1050 is assumed to be the day of the foundation of the city.
In the Middle Ages, Nuremberg was appointed the place where each newly elected German king had to hold his first diet, and where the crown jewels of the empire were kept.
The city had its economic and cultural heyday in the late 15th and early 16th century. World-famous artists and scientists lived and worked in this city.

Founded in the 8th century, Erlangen was transferred from the bishopric of Würzburg to that of Bamberg in 1017 and then was sold to the king of Bohemia in 1361. Chartered in 1398, it passed to the Hohenzollern burgraves of Nuremberg in 1402 and to Bavaria in 1810. It owes the foundations of its prosperity chiefly to the French Protestant (Huguenot) refugees who settled in 1686 in "Christian Erlang," which united with Erlangen in 1824.
Gastronomy
Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and roast sausages contribute to Nuremberg's fame all over the world. But there is much more to discover: Roasted pork with dumplings, Franconian beer, ...
Nuremberg is also a cosmopolitan city, offering regional staples alongside international dishes from dozens of differing countries. The range goes from simple pubs to top-class restaurants.
